the air is filled
with the sound
of war
and birdsong
the birdsong
is the war
the colors:
blueish green and bright red
against beige and orange-brown
two species fighting
for the thing
they want most:
the bird feeder
on one side
the shotguns
on the other
the red necks
all fighting
for possession
but who knows
who will win
one sips
then flips away to
fight again
beaks clashing
click
flick
shing!
falling
a foot from
the ground
pulls apart
departs
only to clash again
whirr
just a blur
all you see
until they stop
if only for a moment
back in actoin
the violence calms
peace regains
a hold on the feeder
a lonely bird
flies timidly up
takes a drink
stops to think
of all the violence
in his world
a war in the sky
fought by hummingbirds

This is a poem summing up about 30 minutes of studying the 2 species of hummingbirds in my backyard. I gave the two types names. The greeny bluish ones with the red necks I called the red necks, obviously. The orangy brown ones I called shotgun hummingbirds because when they cheep, they sound like little guns.
